Is this what Halloween has become?

Halloween just isn’t the same as it was when I was a kid.  Not even close.  Last night, there were hardly any kids out.  Just about every house we went to, kept telling the kids “take a few, we haven’t gotten many trick or treaters.”  The kids that we did see out were all teenagers.  Teens trick or treating.  When i was  a teenager it wasn’t “cool” to trick or treat.  When did it all change?  Oh and not to mention that Halloween was on a saturday night, so of course the teens were out in full force reeking havoc on the neighborhood.

So aside from seeing hardly any kids and mostly teenagers, I did see a few things that really sorta shocked me.  Early in the evening we did run in to a big group of trick or treaters.  These were little kids with a bunch of adults.  Well, one of the men was pulling a wagon….the kids were all walking and he was towing a 30 pack.  No lie! Ok, seeing parents with red cups or even just carrying their beer bottles is the norm, but towing a 30 pack in your kids wagon?! That was a first and we’re not in hillbilly town either.  The next thing that shocked me and will shock all of you, i promise, and I am so bummed I didn’t get a picture but i was just so amazed at what i saw.

An adult couple trick or treating.

I swear!  My mother and I at first thought they were just big teens but then once they walked by us it became apparent that they were clearly adults.  We watched them hit house after house, no kids with them.  They were dressed as renaissance people.  I just couldn’t believe what I was seeing, i even said to my mother “I’ll give them the 5 bucks to go buy a bag of candy at Walmart.”  Seriously!  So now, its okay for adults to trick or treat, what is this world coming too!

But anyways on a whole other note, Hunter looked so friggin handsome as a Clone Trooper.  He didn’t wear the helmet, so he ended up looking more like Luke Skywalker when he disguises himself as a Storm Trooper.  He cleaned house on the candy…thanks to nobody else being out.  And of course I have been doing my good duty as a mother and taste testing plenty of candy to make sure they’re not poisoned!  Mother of the Year Award…here i come!

  1. That is outrageous! Surprised they did not set up a tail-gater at the end of the block? Adults trick or treating?? Well, you son is one handsome young man! Seriously, glad you tasted tested candy for him…. you have my vote for mother of the year!

OMG He is so cute! I have to agree. I have noticed a huge change in Halloween. The spirit is completely different.

  4. Wow, grown ups?? You should have brought the video recorder!

We had some teens out, but it was still mostly the little ones here. I did read in our newspaper that some teens were collecting candy to send to our deployed troops with an organization. I thought that was nice.

It was the same in our neighborhood too — hardly any kids at all! We ended up w/ lots of candy as everyone dumped huge handfuls in her bag, but since my daughter’s too little for it and I don’t need it (despite the fact I think I’ve already ’sampled’ 1/2 lb of it) so I’m gonna send it to the troops — saw an article in the Herald about it. :)

Oops, I forgot to say — I totally love your son’s costume. He is so cute!! :)

We had some pretty old teens/young adults too. I was surprised that this age would trick or treat. Everyone was polite…it just seemed strange. We don’t get many in our area.

Hunter is a great stormtrooper! I can almost hear the STAR WARS theme now…

    That is to funny!
    Your boy is cute!
We had alot of little kid’s this way and not many teenagers. I really thought it would be the other way around, but it wasn’t this year.

I know what you mean about the teenagers! I’m 18 & started college this fall, and I handed out candy with my bf at our apartment and I had TONS of kids I was in high school with last year come trick or treat us! some of them were juniors last year – seniors this year. So I was handing out candy to kids who are probably not even a full year younger than my considering i’m kinda young for my grade. Just crazy. How can they not be embarrassed? I went at 13 and felt awkward then so I quit after that. it’s crazy.

oh also – my brother and his girlfriend went when they were 19 and 20! they had already had a baby together the following june. they left the baby home with my mom and went out trick or treating alone.

that being said it’s not exactly surprising that my mom wound up with custody of the baby who is now 6. & was an adorable dorthy this year =].

Man, it must be an epidemic because the same thing happened to our neighborhoods this year. I wonder if maybe the swine flu and economy played a role in this.

Isn’t he handsome!? What a cutie!

Really? Adults trick or treating? They must be really hard up for some money and/or a quick sugar fix. Sad! :( And yes, teenagers trick or treating irritate the crap out of me. We had a bunch of teenagers that were on a scavenger hunt and would be in front of us at every door. So then of course the person goes in their house to find things for the teens hunt and we’d be standing there waiting for candy. Don’t mess with a mom that has 3 kids in tow with no drink, no coat and NO CHOCOLATE to keep her busy! (My kids don’t share well! lol) I was so irritated that it would take my kids 5-10 mins to get from one house to the next because of these kids. I just wanted to yell at them, ‘Walgreens is 1 mile down the road. Take 5 bux and go bu your scavenger hunt shit there and let all the kids get their candy damn it!’ But I restrained myself! lol

We also saw many Teenagers and they were trying to run in front of the little ones until they saw the parents that is :)
